Fed:Suspending welfare payments to parents put before parliament

The Rudd government has introduced legislation to parliament which aims to suspend
welfare payments .. as a last resort .. from parents whose children wag school.

Education Minister JULIA GILLARD has tabled the proposal in the House of Representatives today.

She's told the chamber it's estimated up to 20 thousand Australian children of compulsory
school age may not be enrolled in school.

Ms GILLARD says suspending welfare payments to parents would be a last resort .. and
only a small group of people would be affected.
