Fed: Aust spy soldier to return home
An Australian soldier involved in spying in Indonesian West Timor is to be sent home
after a formal request from the head of the United Nations peacekeeping force.
A spokesman from the Defence Department says a formal request has been received from
Lieutenant-General JAIME DE LOS SANTOS, head of the UN Transitional Authority in East
Timor -- or UNTAET.
The unnamed soldier has admitted paying $20 to an East Timorese man last week to collect
information about suspected militia bases around ATAMBUA, near the border.
The UN has apologised to Indonesia for the espionage, which breaches the UN peacekeepers'
rules, and has asked for the soldier to be removed.
A Dili-based UN spokeswoman says Indonesia has accepted the apology.
