Fed: PM backs no junior sports calls for Anzac morning

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has cautiously backed calls for junior sporting events not
be conducted on Anzac Day morning.

Mr HOWARD says he isn't about to yell at people on this issue, but prefers them to
defer junior sporting events which will clash with Anzac commemorations.

The Prime Minister says Australia is a free country, but he does believe ANZAC day
is a days where the observance should be kept as rock solid as possible.

Mr HOWARD says his view is a private one and not a prime ministerial pronouncement.

Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has re-issued its travel warning
for Turkey, recommending travellers stay away from Gallipoli because of fears of a terrorist
threat.
